Rue McClanahan, the Emmy-winning actress who brought the sexually liberated Southern belle Blanche Devereaux to life on the hit TV series “The Golden Girls,” has died. She was 76.
Her manager, Barbara Lawrence, said McClanahan died Thursday morning at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital of a brain hemorrhage.
She had undergone treatment for breast cancer in 1997 and later lectured to cancer support groups on “aging gracefully.” In 2009, she had heart bypass surgery.
McClanahan had an active career in off-Broadway and regional stages in the 1960s before she was tapped for TV in the 1970s for the key best-friend character on the hit series “Maude,” starring Beatrice Arthur. After that series ended in 1978, McClanahan landed the role as Aunt Fran on “Mama’s Family” in 1983.
But her most loved role came in 1985 when she co-starred with Arthur, Betty White and Estelle Getty in “The Golden Girls,” a runaway hit that broke the sitcom mold by focusing on the foibles of four aging — and frequently eccentric — women living together in Miami.
“Golden Girls” aimed to show “that when people mature, they add layers,” she told The New York Times in 1985. “They don’t turn into other creatures. The truth is we all still have our child, our adolescent, and your young woman living in us.”
Blanche, who called her father “Big Daddy,” was a frequent target of roommates Dorothy, Rose and the outspoken Sophia (Getty), who would fire off zingers at Blanche such as, “Your life’s an open blouse.”
Fellow “Golden Girl” Betty White called McClanahan a close and dear friend.
“I treasured our relationship,” said White, who was working in Los Angeles on the set of her TV Land comedy “Hot in Cleveland” on Thursday. “It hurts more than I even thought it would, if that’s even possible.”
McClanahan snagged an Emmy for her work on the show in 1987. In an Associated Press interview that year, McClanahan said Blanche was unlike any other role she had ever played.
“Probably the closest I’ve ever done was Blanche DuBois in ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ at the Pasadena Playhouse,” she said. “I think, too, that’s where the name came from, although my character is not a drinker and not crazy.”
Her Blanche Devereaux, she said, “is in love with life and she loves men. I think she has an attitude toward women that’s competitive. She is friends with Dorothy and Rose, but if she has enough provocation she becomes competitive with them. I think basically she’s insecure. It’s the other side of the Don Juan syndrome.”
The We TV cable network said it would honor McClanahan with a marathon of “Golden Girls” episodes featuring Blanche on Friday night. The Logo network said it would replay all episodes of “Sordid Lives,” her last TV series, on Sunday.
May she rest in peace god has you now Rue, I will like to send my condolence out to her family, friends and fans. Betty White is the only Golden Girl…..
Actor Dennis Hopper — star of “Easy Rider,” “Blue Velvet,” “Giant” and many other films — died Saturday of prostate cancer at his Los Angeles-area home, according to The Associated Press. He was 74.
The two-time Academy Award nominee, who announced through a manager in the fall of 2009 that he had been diagnosed with the disease, was surrounded by family and friends at the time of his death, friend Alex Hitz told the AP.
The actor directed, co-wrote and starred in directed 1969′s “Easy Rider,” perhaps the most memorable film of his wildly erratic, nearly six-decade-long career. In that classic, generation-defining film — which also established Jack Nicholson as a major star — he and Peter Fonda played motorcycle-riding hippies “in search of America.” The film was a Hollywood success story; it was produced for less than $500,000 and ultimately earned in excess of $40 million. “Easy Rider” also earned two Academy Award nominations, including a shared screenplay nod for Hopper, Fonda and Terry Southern.
R.I.P Dennis god has you now I would like to send my condolence to his family, fans and friends.

NEW YORK (WPIX) – Celebrity disc jockey DJ AM – also known as Adam Goldstein – was found dead in SoHo Friday.
According to authorities, his body was found in his seventh floor apartment around 5:20 p.m. and was surrounded by prescription drugs. One of his friends – who had reportedly not heard from him in a few days – phoned authorities when he went to check on him and did not get a response.
New York City police then broke down the door and found DJ AM dead.
Goldstein, along with drummer Travis Barker, survived a small plane crash in South Carolina back in September. Four people died in that incident.
DJ AM and Barker are the only ones who survived the crash.
The details surrounding the death of DJ AM are still unclear, but sources say investigators are looking into the possibility of a drug overdose. He was 36-years-old.
Goldstein was best known for performing at some of Hollywood’s most exclusive parties. He was also known for relationships with Nicole Richie and Mandy Moore.

A 15-year-old boy found dead in a car in Fort Worth on Wednesday morning had a history of taking his mother’s car without permission, officials said.
Donovan Yadwisiak, a freshman at Fossil Ridge High School, was found dead inside a Toyota Prius behind a strip mall in the 8600 block of North Beach Street shortly before 8 a.m. on Wednesday. The front of the car was heavily damaged.
“It was obvious he crashed into the light pole,” said Sgt. Pedro Criad, a Fort Worth police spokesman.
As officials were investigating the case, Donovan’s mother, Christina Yadwisiak, reported the car had been stolen by her son. Officials said Yadwisiak had rented the Prius after Donovan took her car without permission and crashed it on Jan. 27.Read Full Report
— A 10-year-old boy reportedly found hanging from a coat hook at his suburban Chicago school took his own life, according to a preliminary coroner’s office ruling on Wednesday. A daily ledger released by the Cook County medical examiner noted “hanging” and “suicide” as the cause of death for fifth-grader Aquan Lewis, who was found unresponsive in a bathroom at the Evanston school Tuesday afternoon and was pronounced dead at a hospital Wednesday morning.
The boy’s distraught mother, Angel Lewis, left a school district building hours earlier, not speaking directly to reporters but saying over and over, “He should have been accounted for. He should have been accounted for.”
A janitor at Oakton Elementary School, Elliott Lieteau, said he found Aquan on the floor of the restroom and that others told him the boy had been pulled off a hook. Lieteau said he performed CPR.
Speaking before the coroner’s finding, a community activist who accompanied Lewis and acted as her spokeswoman said Lewis did not believe her boy committed suicide.
“She sent her son to school yesterday morning in good spirits,” Dawn Valenti said. “The next thing she knows she’s getting a call that her son died. … He did not commit suicide. There was nothing wrong with her son.” Read Full report

(CNN) — A family of four has been found dead in a suburban Columbus, Ohio, home in what’s believed to be a murder-suicide, authorities said Thursday.
Police in Whitehall, east of Columbus, responded to a call around 2 p.m. Wednesday and found the bodies of Mark Meeks, 51; his wife, Jennifer Dallas-Meeks, 40; and children Jimmy, 5, and Abbigail, 8.
“We’re confirming all four victims had gunshot wounds, and a gun was found at the scene,” Sgt. Dan Kelso said.
A suicide note purportedly written by Meeks also was found at the scene, but police are not releasing the note’s contents, Kelso said.
Authorities believe Meeks shot his wife and two children and then himself, Kelso said.
It was the second time this week that a family died in an apparent murder-suicide. On Tuesday, the bodies of Ervin Antonio Lupoe, his wife and five children were found in their Los Angeles, California, area home after Lupoe faxed a letter to a local television station explaining that he and his wife had lost their jobs and felt it was better to end their lives.
