Some early Tech/Internet TV predictions and Trends to Watch in 2013.

1. Cloud Takes Off - Movies in the cloud in 2K13

example: Vudu will replace our DVD collection.

2. Direct Access is King- Skipping the middle man

example: Louis CK, selling his special online and later tickets to his show

3. Original Programming for Web TV

example: Hulu’s Booth at the End and Battleground. Netflix Lilyhammer, YouTube original programming, etc.

4. HBO Breaks from Cable

example: First sign was HBO offering free premieres of Newsroom, Girls and Veep…. Later,  deal with Hulu in Japan…consumers are pushing for it at takemymoneyHBO.com

5. Internet TV viewing surpasses cable and satellite

example:  in June, Netflix subscribers watched 1 billion hours of video…more than cable, the first time web video surpassed cable. This will become the norm in 2013.

HBO renews ‘Boardwalk Empire’: TV News: Series cruises into fourth season

VarietyThe period drama starring Steve Buscemi has been nominated for drama series Emmys in each of its first two seasons and has averaged 2.5 million viewers through the first two episodes of its third season. The season-two finale was the show’s highest-rated episode of 2011 with 3.0 million viewers.

Use #nohomophobes to stop the hate on Twitter: “Faggot” has been tweeted more than 2.5 million times since July

edgeA website that popped up this week is making headlines for tracking how many times anti-gay slurs are used on Twitter.

Nohomophobes.com features several charts and graphs that track Twitter users who use the words “faggot,” “so gay,” “no homo” and “dyke,” in their tweets. The cleverly named site, also has a live feed that shows the actual homophobic tweets soon after they’re made.

As of July 5, 2012, the website claims that “faggot” has been used a staggering 2,538,063 times and counting. Tweeters have used the controversial phrase, “so gay” 906,664 times and “no homo” has been tweeted 832,309 times. “Dyke” has been written 351, 206 times on the social networking website.

A Fort Lauderdale man has sued a Starbucks in suburban Boca Raton, claiming he was fired shortly after he told his supervisor he was HIV-positive. Former Starbucks manager Stephen Barbosa, 34, said he was fired after he returned to work from a two-month medical leave, according to a lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court.His supervisor allegedly accused him of manipulating the time clock and cited his repeated absences for his dismissal, the suit says, adding the action violated the Americans With Disability Act. Before the firing, Barbosa had worked as a Starbucks manager for four years.

Alison Pill Apologizes After Accidentally Tweeting Topless Picture

Alison Pill regrets sharing on Twitter a picture of herself lying topless on a bed, claiming she didn’t do it on purpose. The Zelda Fitzgerald of “Midnight in Paris” explains that she accidentally hit the upload button when all she really wanted was deleting it.

She quickly removes the photo after realizing her error, but it has already made its round on the internet. “Yep. That picture happened,” she admits. “Ugh. My tech issues have now reached new heights, apparently. How a deletion turned into a tweet… Apologies.”

“We were deeply dismayed to see this and find it unacceptable, disrespectful and in very bad taste,” the network said in a statement Friday. “We made this clear to the executive producers of the series, who apologized immediately for this careless mistake.

“We condemn it in the strongest possible terms and have halted all future shipments of the DVDs, removed it from our digital platforms and will edit the scene for all future airings on any distribution domestic or international.” Read more
