1. Swine flu is rising in Nort Texas

Nine new cases of swine flu were confirmed for North Texas on Saturday, according to Tarrant County Public Health.

That brings the total number of swine flu cases confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control to 14, the agency said. It is not known where the new cases are located as the county health department’s laboratory tests for a 33-county region.

Four Cleburne High School students tested positive for swine flu, prompting Cleburne Independent School District to extend its district-wide school closings through next week.

“We are following the recommendations of both the CDC and the Texas Department of State Health Services in keeping our schools closed through May 8,” said Cleburne superintendent Ronny Beard.

Tests on three additional Cleburne High SChool students were sent to the CDC on Friday, the district said. Cleburne schools expect to reopen on May 11. Read more here

KILLED HIS STEP BROTHER AT AGE 14 NOW 23 WITH LIFE AND NO POSSIBLITY OF PAROLE

artlottprisoncourtesy(CNN) — It began as horseplay, with two teenage stepbrothers chasing each other with blow guns and darts. But it soon escalated when one of the boys grabbed a knife.

The older teen, Michael Barton, 17, was dead by the time he reached the hospital, stabbed twice. The younger boy, Quantel Lotts, 14, would eventually become one of Missouri’s youngest lifers.

Lotts was sentenced in Missouri’s St. Francois County Circuit Court in 2002 to life in prison without parole for first-degree murder in his stepbrother’s stabbing death.

It made no difference that at the time of the deadly scuffle, Lotts was barely old enough to watch PG-13 movie and too young to drive, vote or buy beer.

“They locked me up and threw away the keys,” Lotts, now 23, said from prison. “They took away all hope for the future.”

His stepmother, the victim’s mother, has forgiven Lotts and is working with lawyers to gain his release.

Lotts is one of at least 73 U.S. inmates — most of them minorities — who were sentenced to spend the rest of their lives in prison for crimes committed when they were 13 or 14, according to the Equal Justice Initiative, a nonprofit organization in Alabama that defends indigent defendants and prisoners.

The 73 are just a fraction of the more than 2,000 offenders serving life sentences for crimes they committed as minors under the age of 18.Read more of this story

artmissingtracypd(CNN) — A search warrant was executed at a Tracy, California, mobile home park where a slain 8-year-old girl lived, and a related search will be conducted at a nearby church Tuesday, police said.

Sandra Cantu had been missing since March 27, and her body was found Monday, stuffed into a suitcase that was raised from a pond at a dairy farm. An autopsy was being conducted Tuesday, Tracy police Sgt. Tony Sheneman told reporters, but he said he did not know when results would be available.

“No one is currently detained. No one has been arrested,” Sheneman said. “We have not closed our interest on any particular person, and we’re still looking for the perpetrator of this crime.”

A search warrant was served Monday night inside the mobile home park where Sandra lived with her family, Sheneman said, but he would not offer specifics. Video A video is also in this article read more.

m_5b948d1a710236505233949b84d2ce24Matthew Gillotti’s family celebrated last Friday when he married his longtime girlfriend in a small, private ceremony.
This Friday, the Gillotti family will also be together — for Matthew’s funeral.

The New Fairfield man, who had been in poor health since a motorcycle accident last summer, died in his sleep early Sunday morning as he and his new wife spent their honeymoon weekend at a Danbury hotel. He was 23 years old.

“He was a great, great kid, and one of the most good-hearted people you’ll ever meet,” older brother David Gillotti said Tuesday. “He just had a rough time since the accident.”

Emergency medical personnel were unable to revive Gillotti when they were summoned to the Ethan Allen Inn on Lake Avenue Extension just before 3 a.m. Sunday. His wife, Cassandra Muliolis, had left the room to get a bottle of water from a vending machine, police said, and found him unresponsive when she returned. She tried unsuccessfully to rouse him, and he was pronounced dead at Danbury Hospital an hour later.

An autopsy performed by the state medical examiner on Monday was unable to say why he died. Cause of death was listed as undetermined, pending toxicological reports that will likely take several weeks to complete.

Police found nothing in the room to indicate the death was suspicious, Lt. James King said this week.

But David Gillotti said his brother’s health had been unraveling since Matthew Gillotti crashed his motorcycle on Barnum Road last Aug. 22.

A new rider, Matthew lost control of his bike on a curve and suffered serious abdominal injuries, including a ruptured spleen. He spent a month in the hospital, almost half of it in intensive care, David Gillotti said.

Even after his discharge, he continued to experience severe pain which couldn’t be alleviated by numerous visits to doctors and a return trip to the hospital, his brother said. He also had bouts with pneumonia and was on blood thinners to treat recurring clots.

Despite his problems, the New Fairfield High School graduate, who had enjoyed playing the drums, baseball, weigh lifting and BMX racing while growing up, continued to attend classes at Naugatuck Valley Community College and worked part-time at a local home improvement store.

A short time before his death, Matthew Gillotti decided to marry Muliolis, a New Milford woman he had been dating for about six years, David Gillotti said. The wedding, a small, family-only event, was held at the Ethan Allen Inn.

“They were a couple of young kids and didn’t have any money, so that’s where they spent their honeymoon,” David Gillotti said. “He was complaining a lot about abdominal pain for a couple of weeks before he died. I think he had an idea that he didn’t have a lot of time.”

In addition to his wife, Cassandra, and brother, David, Matthew Gillotti is survived by his mother, Paula Fischer, father Albert D. Gillotti, brother Justin, half-brother Cody, grandmother Nancy Fischer, and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Calling hours will be Thursday at the Green Funeral Home on Main Street, Danbury, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The funeral on Friday will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations in Matthew’s name be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Connecticut Chapter, 705 North Mountain Road, Suite 102, Newington, CT 06111

A delivery driver faces manslaughter, assault and DWI charges in the death of a pregnant woman who was killed when the van he was driving hopped a curb in midtown Manhattan during the evening rush hour and struck her and a co-worker on the sidewalk.

Police charged Keston Brown, 27, of the Longwood section of the Bronx, in the Friday crash that killed Ysemny Ramos, 29, of Bensonhurst, who was three months’ pregnant, and seriously injured a female co-worker. The work colleague, who was walking with Ramos, was in stable condition Saturday at Bellevue Hospital Center.

A police source said a passenger in the van was arrested for criminal possession of marijuana. His name had not been released.

Brown was awaiting arraignment Saturday.

Brown was driving west on 37th Street at about 5 p.m. when he drove onto the sidewalk, striking the two women, police said. The van hit the building at 10 E. 37th St.

The reason for the crash was unclear, but some witnesses told reporters that the van’s driver and a passenger had been driving slowly alongside the women, catcalling them, in the moments before the vehicle lurched forward.

Ramos was dead when police arrived at the scene. Grieving relatives said she was pregnant with her third child, and had been headed home to celebrate her third wedding anniversary. Read more on this story
