Whitney Houston’s 49th Birthday: Remembering a Diva

Whitney Houston would have celebrated her 49th birthday this week, on August 9. Sadly, one of the greatest voices of our time died tragically earlier this year, on February 11. Since her untimely passing, Houston’s legacy has been celebrated and upheld all over the world. To prove just how loved she is, the pop icon’s homegoing service on February 18 aired on three cable channels — CNN, BET, and E! — for four hours and drew millions of viewers, even surpassing the royal wedding in online viewership. She is indeed gone, but not forgotten. From Glee to the Grammys, Oprah to the Obama’s, here’s how the world has paid tribute to Whitney Houston since her death.

BET Awards Viewership Drops in 2012

Although Sunday night’s telecast of the 2012 BET Awards drew in a whopping 10M plus tweets, it wasn’t enough to topple the previous year’s ratings.

According to EURweb, BET suffered a slight drop in rating from their 2011 show — overall it fell from 7.7M to 7.4M viewers.

Despite slightly lower than expected numbers, the show turned out to be the third most watched event of 2012 directly behind the Super Bowl and the Grammys.

Sunday’s show welcomed ESSENCE Music Festival performer D’Angelo, who made his first TV appearance in more than 12 years, Monica, Brandy, Cissy Houston and Chaka Khan who joined forces for a stellar Whitney Houston tribute.

R&B singer Toni Braxton has been in financial trouble before, so it is sad to hear reports that she is in foreclosure.

The six-time Grammy winner and her husband, Keirston“Keri” Lewis bought their Henderson, NV home in 2007, and now it is listed in foreclosure.

The deed appears under her representative, celebrity buyer and money manager William Harper. He has also represented other celebrities mostly in the music industry such as Sheena Easton, Trent Reznor, Kris Kristofferson, and Jakob Dylan.

The home is currently listed on REALTOR.com® for $1.15 million, a significant loss compared to the $2.6 million the couple paid for the property three years ago.

This two-story home built in 2002 features four fireplaces, a pool, spa and a three-car garage. The 5,337-square foot home also has built-in bookcases, a wine refrigerator, a swimming pool, and a balcony overlooking the hill and mountain views.

In 1993 Braxton topped the charts with her second studio album Secrets, which featured the hit song “Un-Break My Heart.” However, she filed for bankruptcy not long after this success. Her latest album, Pulse, was released this May.

Braxton is not only a singer, but an actor and dancer. She competed in the seventh season of Dancing with the Stars, was in the 2001 film Kingdom Come and has appeared in TV shows like Kevin Hill.

Marsha Ambrosius Talks Album/Single With Centric

Vodpod videos no longer available.

All you got to do is say yes, to Centric Selects first spotlighted artist Marsha Ambrosius and her new single “Hope She Cheats on You (With A Basketball Player).” The six-time Grammy nominated singer/songwriter is dropping the new single in preparation for the October 26th release of her first solo album,LATE NIGHTS & EARLY MORNINGS. Produced by Ambrosius and Canei, the single is a sassy and in-your face anthem that holds no punches. [The song is] the reality of a bad break up. Everything that could go wrong for him I want it to because my ego is bruised and I’m acting out.” Formerly the singing half of soul duo Floetry, the UK bred star has long been acclaimed for her vocal prowess and honest lyrical content that have made her a standout in the sea of generic R&B.  “My pen and my point of view has a certain aggression to it because I’ve listened to a lot of male influenced music, which I think makes me one of the most outspoken writers out here. Sometimes as a woman you don’t wanna say what’s on your mind for fear of being judged. But why wouldn’t I say it like that if that’s how I felt?”
